Flinders Ultimate Social League (FUSL)

FUSL VI

Flinders Ultimate Social League VI started on the 17th of August with another 6 teams battleing it out again.
William Lightning are back with a second carnation of the team and are looking quite strong. Johnny and Sam are taking the helm of a team consisted of mainly newer players, but having said that, this team is not to be messed with as they show excellent defence and disk movement skills.
Sean has entered in the Gunshow, a team consisting of the newer players of his SAFDA mixed league team Firepower to allow the players to have more game time together and gel. They are keen to show the rest of of the FUSL teams whos boss having already proved that they can handle themselves excellently against a strong zone defence.
Joel, Kiely and Ross have banded together to bring the team Glory, Glamour and Ross to the fray (Guess who plays which roll in that team name!) and show considerable strength. Jamo comes into the league with the team called Brother Loves Travelling Road Show. While being quite a large team, not all memebers of the team are able to make it out each week. But having said that, they show no form of weakness, with a well blended team of newer and experienced players.
Lastly, Unleashed fills out the league, with Ben Foley taking the lead. This team consists of many players that where in FUSL V, as well as a couple of brand new players and some SAFDA league players. A well rounded out team if you ask me, and they look to be high contenders in the league.

In the few games that have been played already, Percentages are close, games a very competitive, well spirited and great fun to watch. It will be interesting to see how the league and its teams continue towards the finals.
If your looking for something to do on a Monday night, come be part of what is the Flinders Ultimate Social League starting at 6:30pm every week on the main oval at Flinders Uni.

Cheers,
Dale Grixti

FUSL V

2009 saw the Flinders Ultimate Social League continue with 6 teams battling it out over 12 weeks. The draw consisted of 2 sets of round robin play for seeding into the finals. At the end of week 10, the seedings looked like this.

In the semi's Spartacus and B-techies battled it out to see which team could attempt to steal the trophy off Med-n-Some in the finals, who had been strong all semester and where favourite for the win. Mean while, Red Hot Go took on The Slappers to see who would be fighting to not get the wooden spoon the following week against William Lightning. In the end, It was William Lightning pitted against Red Hot Go in the 5v6 player, with William Lightning getting the edge on Red Hot Go. In the 3v4 play off, The Slappers stepped it up and crushed B-techies who had lost the previous week. The finals saw Sean leading Spartacus against Jeremy's Med-n-Some. Determination won this match as Spartacus took th win, which ment Sean was able to boast about his first FUSL win.

Final Standings looked like this:

Spartacus
Med-n-Some
The Slappers
B-techies
William Lightning
Red Hot Go

Most Spirited Female Player was a joint win by Kathrine Foley and Lesley Moore, with Matt "Jamo" Jamieson taking the males Most Spirited Player. Most Valuable Female went to Emma Victory and Most Valuable Male went to Blake Hoile, both of which had only just started playing Ultimate this semester.

See you next semester for FUSL VI,

FUSL IV

In Flinders Ultimate Social League IV (can you believe it's been four already) there was plenty of merriment all over the fields as The Barry Manilows took on The Clap in a hotly contested final. The Clap was able to come away with the win, though I think frisbee was the true winner in this league as everybody really seemed to enjoy themselves.

FUSL III

FUSL has finished for another season and in spectacular style, with a nail biting finale and lots of good times. There were 8 teams in this league, double that of previous leagues, with the Flycatchers and Da Frizz both putting in teams, and local high school ASMS also entering two teams. There were also four student based teams which was excellent. The competition was tight, with all teams beating each other (with the exception of Savage).

At the end of the minor rounds the ladder looked like this:

Savage and Savage Garden quickly established themselves as the frontrunners in the quarters and semis, easily progressing to the Grand Final.
The Final itself was quite spectacular, with the game going to 11 all before Savage finally put in the winner.
Everyone enjoyed pizza and drink on the sideline supplied courtesy of FUUFC and the halftime entertainment, a doolio (100m dash, endzone to endzone) which was won by Andrew 'Dabbo' Dabovich in the guys and Alison Clarke in the gals.

The final standings were:
Savage
Savage Garden
Flycatchers
Da Frizz
OrgASMS
ASMS Joel
Catnip
ASMS Alec

MVPs went to Emma White and Russell Nassim, both from Catnip, with the MSP going to Tom 'Bruce' Lee from Savage Garden. Flycatchers took out the Spirit Prize.

Stay tuned for more announcements about the next Flinders Ultimate Social League to begin in August.

FUSL II Wrapup

Going into the Semis, the ladder looked like this:

But in the Semis, bottom ranked ASMS pulled out a huge upset over top ranked Randy Leprachauns to advance to the Grand Final where they met the White Stripes in a spectacular game. The White Stripes pulled out the victory to become only the 2nd team to ever win a FUSL!!

Final results were:

  1. The White Stripes
  2. ASMS
  3. Randy Leprechauns
  4. The Alcomoholic Spiderpigs

Female MVP: Jess (WS)
Male MVP: Jony (ASP) and Paul (ASP)
Female Spirit: Emma K. (ASP)
Male Spirit: Numerous (about 8 people on 2 votes each)
