A Brief State League Wrap-up

The girls, FURYESS, finished 3rd but showed great signs of development this season. They will be a strong force in future comeptitions. Erin Wallis honed her throwing skills after returning to the team from abroad and no one would deny just how devastating her long options can be. Tessa Bilney and Emma Kiel were standout beginners for the team.
From the boys, our Div 2 team won the minor rounds by a large amount but was disqualified from the Finals because they failed to hand in their score sheets. They fell further down the ladder when a change in the timetable that wasn't relayed to them meant they forfeited their semi. I'm not sure where they finished in the end, but this team was very strong and definitely strong favourites to win the division, which is also great for Flinders Future Prospects.
Our Div 1 split teams, Model Inc: Blue Steel and Model Inc: Magnum both had strong starts to the season, racing to number 1 and 2 on the ladder. Unfortunately, injuries to key players Joel Pillar and Dale Grixti saw Magnum drop to last place on the ladder by the end of the minor rounds. They won their final to finish 5th. Blue Steel won their semi against North Adelaide easily and progressed to the final against Flycatchers.
The final was awesome and intense and everything you could want from a Grand Final. Since regular league started in 2004 Flinders has never lost an Open or Mixed league. The Flycatchers were very hungry for this win however and our Flinders team only represented half of our strength. The game went down to universe point 14-14 when star player Alec Deslandes went for a dump cut up the line and collided heavily with team mate Greg Schrader. He managed to hang on to the disc but broke his cheek and dislocated his eye socket, required surgery and a plate put in. Blue Steel continued to fight out the point with numerous turnovers from both teams including what looked like the winning goal to Greg Schrader (called back on a disputed call) before Flycatchers finally slotted home the winner.
Brett Middleton won Most Valuable Player for Div 1 and Brett and Sam Ogden shared the Most Spirited Player award.
Congratulations to all teams on their excellent performance and great spirit.

Congratulations to the following players who gained selection for the Australia U19 Open team (Aussie Thunder) that will be competing at the 2008 World Ultimate and Guts Championships in Vancouver, Canada!!!
Robbie Andrew (Flinders)

Sean Lace (Flinders)
Alexander Britten-Jones (Adelaide Uni)
Competition was tight at the last training camp, with the squad of 35 cut down to the final 25. Click here for more info

FUSL III is about to kick off in a blaze of colour and merriment!!!

The league officially starts on the 17th of March, but in the two weeks beforehand (3rd and 10th) we're holding Come'n'Try days which are perfect for bringing out new players or brushing up on some of your skills before the league starts.
We'll also use those two sessions to sort out teams. At the end of the session on the 10th of March we'll be having a bbq so we can all relax and have a chat.
Hope to see you all out!!

3 weeks into the State league see the Flinders teams doing quite well. Fury's Womens team (Furyess), which features a number of up-and-coming young players, are currently at 1W-2L. They've done really well against the other teams (who have much more experience) and should be right up there near the end of the league.
In Div1 Open, Model Inc. Blue Steel is currently sitting on top of the ladder (3W-0L), while Model Inc. Magnum is close behind (2W-1L). The standout performers in both teams have been the players new to Div1, who have running all over the experienced Div1 opposition.
Games are played Wednesday nights, Goodwood Road, South Parklands. Women's from 6:30pm, Div1 Open from 8pm. Div2 Open starts in 4 weeks (March 19).
