SUG 2003 Write up
The first day of competition saw Adelaide get defeated by Melbourne Uni 15-2, and then Monash Uni 15-5, whilst Flinders Uni lost to Melbourne Uni 15-6 and Monash 13-8. The first derby between the two SA unis saw Flinders win by 14-8. Both teams were dissapointed, however this was attributed to first day nerves.
The second day saw huge improvements in both the Flinders and Adelaide teams. Confidence was up, and players were passing, catching and leading better and faster. The second derby kick started the day, and this time Adelaide Uni were the victors, defeating Flinders 15-9.
The second round of the day saw both SA teams go down, Adelaide losing to Monash 13-7 in a hard fought match which the score didn't reflect, and Flinders losing to Melbourne 15-6. However, on the last pool match of the tournament, both SA teams shone, with Flinders defeating Monash 15-9, and Adelaide defeating Melbourne 15-9, in Melbourne's only defeat of the tournament. Flinders was a player short that day, and had no subs on the bench. Huge efforts came from the whole team, Iome, Bri, Ryan, Joel, Tets and Mike.
Adelaide and Flinders, despite these wins, were scheduled to play off for third spot and the bronze medal this morning, however, late withdrawals of two players meant that Flinders had to forfeit the match, having only 4 players, with a minimum requirement of 5. All players showed huge improvement, particularly the Adelaide girls ( Sarah C, Sarah F and Anne), and the results towards the end of the tournament were very encouraging for the Australian Uni Games.
If the Adelaide team members (and Flinders Uni if they want!) can come out this Sunday night after practice we will be having a small presentation ceremony and a few drinks to celebrate. There will be MVP and MIP awards and anything else I can think of, plus all those players who didn't receive their bronze medals can get them on Sunday at the British pub. Be there about 5.30pm. Everyone else also welcome.
