Furious Champions - SUG 2005

During the recently held 2005 Southern University Games in Victoria, the Flinders University Ultimate Frisbee Club unleashed its full fury on its interstate and home state opponents winning the gold medal in the 2005 Mixed Ultimate Frisbee Championship. Flinders FURY devastated the opposition leaving in their wake a path of destruction as they played through the tournament undefeated with victories over Ballarat University, Deakin University, Monash University and the University of South Australia. Flinders FURY were also victorious over heir arch nemesis Melbourne University who had successfully defended their SUG Championship title in 2004 and were once again tournament favourites.

Unsuccessful against this team over the last couple of interstate encounters, Flinders FURY stood up against this Victorian threat in their last regular game winning an intense and closely contested encounter 11-8. On the strength of this result, Flinders FURY went into the finals as the top ranked team undefeated on 5 wins and new favourites to take out the Championship. On the final day of competition Flinders FURY concentrated on burying their semi final opposition to conserve energy for their gold medal match against an unknown opponent with a 15-4 win over Ballarat University. Flinders FURY were unrelenting as they played a flowing offensive game that rained in the points and were merciless on defence forcing turnover after turnover close to their offensive end zone that resulted in many easy points. Finishing early and waiting for the other semi-final game to finish, Flinders FURY watched on as the early morning mist shrouded their unknown gold medal opponent.

Melbourne University emerged victorious with a 9-6 win over Monash University. Faced once again with the task of playing their traditional interstate rivals who were strengthened with the return of their strongest and most skilled player, Flinders FURY showed true character playing a team game that involved all in a convincing 12-5 victory to defeat the defending champions and tournament favourites to earn the title of the 2005 Southern University Games Mixed Ultimate Frisbee Champions. Congratulations to all who played in the most successful South Australian Ultimate Frisbee Team ever in an interstate competition and the only South Australian team in the Southern University Games to win a medal of any colour.
